भूमावश्रूयत महांस्तदा55सीत् कृपणं महत् | पततां पात्यमानानां पत्त्यश्वरथदन्तिनाम्
sañjaya uvāca | bhūmāv aśrūyata mahāṁs tadā śabdaḥ kṛpaṇo mahān | patatāṁ pātyamānānāṁ patty-aśva-ratha-dantinām ||
సంజయుడు పలికెను—అప్పుడు భూమిపై ఒక మహత్తరమైన, కరుణార్ద్రమైన ఘోష వినబడింది. శస్త్రాస్త్రాలతో ఛిన్నమైన దేహాలతో కొందరు పడిపోతూ, కొందరు పడగొట్టబడుతూ—పాదాతులు, అశ్వాలు, రథికులు, గజాలు చేసిన ఆ అసహాయ ఆర్తనాదం స్వర్గలోకమువరకు వ్యాపించినట్లు అనిపించింది; యుద్ధం కలిగించే దారుణ దుస్థితి అందులోనే వెల్లడైంది.
