Educational Q&A

Power or divine gifts (boons) are ethically neutral; their misuse to harm the righteous becomes a dharmic crisis. The verse presents the principle that rulers or protectors must act to restrain oppression and restore order, even when the oppressor’s strength originates from a previously granted favor.

The gods collectively petition the Lord, reporting that the asura Tāraka—empowered by a boon—has begun tormenting both the devas and the sages. They request that his death be ordained, setting the stage for the events leading to his eventual defeat.
