Educational Q&A

Bhīṣma frames his instruction by appealing to authoritative tradition: ethical guidance is strengthened by citing an ancient itihāsa, especially a discourse involving cosmic authorities like Brahmā and Indra.

Bhīṣma signals a transition into an illustrative story: he tells Yudhiṣṭhira that scholars recount an old dialogue between Brahmā (Pitāmaha) and Indra as a precedent relevant to the topic under discussion.
