Adhyāya 57: Tapas–Dāna Phala
On the Fruits of Austerity and Giving
क्वचिदप्सरसां संघान् गन्धर्वाणां च पार्थिव,पृथ्वीनाथ! कहीं झुंड-की-झुंड अप्सराएँ विहार कर रही थीं। कहीं गन्धर्वोके समुदाय अपनी प्रियतमाओंके आलिंगन-पाशमें बँधे हुए थे। उन सबको राजाने देखा। वे कभी उन्हें देख पाते थे और कभी नहीं देख पाते थे
kvacid apsarasāṃ saṅghān gandharvāṇāṃ ca pārthiva | pṛthvīnātha! kvacid jhuṇḍa-kī-jhuṇḍa apsarāḥ vihāraṃ kurvanti sma | kvacid gandharvāṇāṃ samudāyāḥ svapriyatamānām āliṅgana-pāśe baddhāḥ santi sma | tān sarvān rājā dadarśa | te kadācid enaṃ dṛśyante sma kadācin na dṛśyante sma ||
భీష్ముడు పలికెను—ఓ రాజా, భూమినాథా! ఎక్కడో అప్సరాసల గుంపులు ఆనందంగా విహరిస్తుండగా, మరెక్కడో గంధర్వుల సమూహాలు తమ ప్రియతమల ఆలింగన-పాశంలో బంధింపబడినట్లుగా కనిపించాయి. రాజు వారందరినీ చూచెను—కానీ కొన్నిసార్లు కనిపించగా, కొన్నిసార్లు కనిపించలేదు।
