Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that disciplined restraint—avoiding intoxicants, meat/honey, and sexual misconduct (approaching another’s wife)—is a dharmic virtue that leads to auspicious posthumous results, described here as attaining heaven.

In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and right conduct. Here he states a concise rule of ethical discipline, linking personal restraint with the reward of svarga.
