Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how sensory allure and carefully arranged circumstances can challenge even disciplined ascetics; it invites reflection on self-mastery (indriya-nigraha) and the ethical ambiguity of using power to disrupt another’s spiritual practice.

Kaṇva specifies a supportive condition for Menakā’s mission—let a fragrant forest breeze arise when she attempts to entice the sage. Indra agrees and makes the arrangement, after which Menakā proceeds to Viśvāmitra’s (Kauśika’s) hermitage.
