Adhyāya 71: Kaca and the Saṃjīvanī-vidyā

Devayānī–Śukra Episode

vaiśampāyana uvāca | apaśyamānas tam ṛṣiṃ tathā coktas tayā ca saḥ | tāṃ dṛṣṭvā ca varārohāṃ śrīmatīṃ cāru-hāsinīm |

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights an ethical tension: attraction arises naturally, yet the narrative frames the maiden’s beauty as inseparable from tapas (austerity) and self-control. It suggests that desire should be approached with awareness of dharma—respecting the ascetic setting, the woman’s dignity, and proper conduct before proceeding.

King Duṣyanta arrives at Kaṇva’s hermitage and does not find the sage present. The ascetic maiden speaks to him (inviting him to stay/receive hospitality). As he looks at her, he notices her exceptional beauty and radiance, and, moved by what he sees, he prepares to ask her questions.
