महादेवान्तकाभ्यां च कामात्‌ क्रोधाच्च भारत । एकत्वमुपपन्नानां जज्ञे शूर: परंतप:,भारत! उनके यहाँ महादेव, यम, काम और क्रोधके सम्मिलित अंशसे शत्रुसंतापी शूरवीर अश्वत्थामाका जन्म हुआ, जो इस पृथ्वीपर महापराक्रमी और शत्रुपक्षका संहार करनेवाला वीर था। राजन! उसके नेत्र कमलदलके समान विशाल थे

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

mahādevāntakābhyāṃ ca kāmāt krodhāc ca bhārata |

ekatvam upapannānāṃ jajñe śūraḥ parantapaḥ ||

వైశంపాయనుడు పలికెను—ఓ భారతా! మహాదేవుడు, అంతకుడు (యముడు), అలాగే కామం, క్రోధం—వీటి అంసాలు ఏకత్వమై కలిసినప్పుడు, శత్రువులను దహింపజేసే పరంతపుడైన శూరుడు జన్మించాడు.
