वैशम्पायन उवाच मानुषेषु मनुष्येन्द्र सम्भूता ये दिवौकस: । प्रथमं दानवांश्वैव तांस्‍्ते वक्ष्यामि सर्वश:,वैशम्पायनजी बोले--नरेन्द्र! मनुष्योंमें जो देवता और दानव प्रकट हुए थे, उन सबके जन्मका ही पहले तुम्हें परिचय दे रहा हूँ। विप्रचित्ति नामसे विख्यात जो दानवोंका राजा था, वही मनुष्योंमें श्रेष्ठ जरासन्ध नामसे विख्यात हुआ। राजन! हिरण्यकशिपु नामसे प्रसिद्ध जो दितिका पुत्र था, वही मनुष्यलोकमें नरश्रेष्ठ शिशुपालके रूपमें उत्पन्न हुआ

vaiśampāyana uvāca

mānuṣeṣu manuṣyendra sambhūtā ye divaukasaḥ |

prathamaṃ dānavāṃś caiva tāṃs te vakṣyāmi sarvaśaḥ ||

వైశంపాయనుడు పలికెను—నరేంద్రా! మనుష్యులలో అవతరించిన దివ్యసత్త్వముల విషయమును నేను నీకు చెప్పుదును; ముందుగా దానవుల సంగతిని సంపూర్ణంగా వివరించెదను.
