राष्ट्र च रज्जयामास वृत्तेन भरतर्षभ | स तथा सह पुत्रेण रममाणो महीपति:,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--ऐसा कहकर महाभागा गंगादेवी वहीं अन्तर्धान हो गयीं। गंगाजीके इस प्रकार आज्ञा देनेपर महाराज शान्तनु सूर्यके समान प्रकाशित होनेवाले अपने पुत्रको लेकर राजधानीमें आये। उनका हस्तिनापुर इन्द्रनगगरी अमरावतीके समान सुन्दर था। पूरुवंशी राजा शान्तनु पुत्रसहित उसमें जाकर अपने-आपको सम्पूर्ण कामनाओंसे सम्पन्न एवं सफलमनोरथ मानने लगे। तदनन्तर उन्होंने सबको अभय देनेवाले महात्मा एवं गुणवान् पुत्रको राजकाजमें सहयोग करनेके लिये समस्त पौरवोंके बीचमें युवराज-पदपर अभिषिक्त कर दिया। जनमेजय! शान्तनुके उस महायशस्वी पुत्रने अपने आचार-व्यवहारसे पिताको, पौरवसमाजको तथा समूचे राष्ट्रको प्रसन्न कर लिया। अमितपराक्रमी राजा शान्तनुने वैसे गुणवान् पुत्रके साथ आनन्दपूर्वक रहते हुए चार वर्ष व्यतीत किये। एक दिन वे यमुना नदीके निकटवर्ती वनमें गये
rāṣṭraṃ ca rajjayāmāsa vṛttena bharatarṣabha | sa tathā saha putreṇa ramamāṇo mahīpatiḥ ||
వైశంపాయనుడు పలికెను—ఓ భరతశ్రేష్ఠా! తన సద్ఆచారంతో అతడు సమస్త రాజ్యాన్ని ఆనందింపజేశాడు. కుమారునితో సమరసంగా నివసిస్తూ ఆ రాజు సంతృప్తి, ఆనందాలతో దినములు గడిపెను.
