Educational Q&A

A ruler (and especially an heir-apparent) sustains the state not merely through power but through vṛtta—ethical conduct. When character is sound, the people and the polity naturally become ‘pleased’ (rañj), producing stability and legitimacy.

The narrator describes how the king’s son, through exemplary behavior, wins the affection of the entire kingdom; the king lives happily with him. In the surrounding passage, this frames the period after the son’s return and recognition, when his virtues bring public satisfaction.
