Upamanyu’s Tapas, Shiva’s Indra-Form Test, and the Bestowal of Kshiroda and Gaṇapatya
तुष्टो ऽस्मि ते वरं ब्रूहि तपसानेन सुव्रत ददामि चेप्सितान् सर्वान् धौम्याग्रज महामते
tuṣṭo 'smi te varaṃ brūhi tapasānena suvrata dadāmi cepsitān sarvān dhaumyāgraja mahāmate
‘నేను నీపై సంతోషించితిని; వరం కోరుము. హే సువ్రతా, ఈ తపస్సు వలన—హే మహామతీ ధౌమ్యుని అగ్రజా—నీకు కావలసిన సమస్త సిద్ధులను నేను ప్రసాదించెదను.’

It shows that Shiva’s anugraha (grace) is won through disciplined tapas and vrata; Linga-centered devotion culminates in the Lord personally granting the devotee’s chosen boon.
Shiva appears as Pati—the sovereign Lord who is independent and compassionate—responding to the Pashu (individual soul) when bondage is thinned by austerity and right resolve.
Tapas with suvrata (strict observance of vows), aligning with Pashupata-oriented discipline where inner purification and steadfast practice invite Shiva’s direct bestowal of siddhi or grace.
