Vaitaraṇī: Torments of the Sinful, Sins Enumerated, and the Vaitaraṇī Go-dāna Rite
एवं कृते वैनतेय सा सरित्सुतरा भवेत् / सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति यो दद्याद्भुवि मानवः
evaṃ kṛte vainateya sā saritsutarā bhavet / sarvānkāmānavāpnoti yo dadyādbhuvi mānavaḥ
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vainateya)
Concept: Dana performed properly removes obstacles and yields desired aims (kama-siddhi).
Vedantic Theme: Karma-yoga orientation: right action and giving purify and support higher aims; worldly boons are framed as fruits of dharma.
Application: Give charity in the prescribed manner (with faith, right recipient/time), treating it as obstacle-removal and merit-building rather than mere transaction.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: river/tirtha (implied crossing)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: recurring motif of ‘crossing’ difficult passages through dana/shraddha support (general thematic parallel); Garuda Purana: dana-mahatmya sections emphasizing kama-siddhi through charity (general)
This verse states that performing the prescribed giving makes the fearful river-crossing become “easy to cross,” indicating dāna supports the soul’s safe passage and generates merit (puṇya).
By linking correct ritual performance with an “easy crossing” of the river, the verse reflects the Garuda Purana theme that post-death obstacles are eased by dharmic acts—especially charity—done while alive.
Practice regular, sincere charity and support dharmic causes; in Garuda Purana terms, such giving builds merit, reduces suffering in transition, and aligns one’s life with dharma.
