Lord Vishnu (in discourse to Garuda)

Concept: Abhimāni-devatā doctrine: Gaṇapa as the presiding identifier of ākāśa; ‘ubhayatrābhimānī’ indicates governance across paired aspects (e.g., subtle/gross, inner/outer, micro/macro).

Vedantic Theme: Distinguishing the witnessing awareness from functional identifications; understanding layered agency (adhidaiva/adhyātma) without mistaking it for the Self.

Application: Contemplate ‘space’ as both external expanse and inner openness; practice mantra-japa or silent listening (śravaṇa) to refine awareness of śabda in ākāśa.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Type: elemental domain (mahābhūta)

FAQs

This verse highlights that each subtle element has a governing ‘abhimānī’—a principle of identification that links cosmic elements with the embodied experience, helping explain how the subtle body relates to the cosmos.

By mapping space (ākāśa) to its presiding principle (Gaṇapa) and the notion of identification in “both ways,” the text frames the soul’s journey through subtle domains as structured by tattvas and their governing forces.

Cultivate awareness of ‘identification’ (abhimāna)—reduce egoic clinging and practice discipline in speech and mind, aligning one’s inner space (ākāśa) with clarity and devotion.
