Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vainateya)

Concept: Sacred time is Vishnu-centered: the cosmos is ritually interpreted through Vishnu’s ‘sleep’ (yoga-nidra), guiding observance and inner discipline.

Vedantic Theme: Ishvara as the ground of cosmic cycles; time (kala) as a manifestation within the Lord’s order; contemplative stillness mirrored in Chaturmasya restraint.

Application: Observe Chaturmasya disciplines (moderation, vrata, increased japa/puja, charity); use calendrical attentiveness to align life rhythms with spiritual practice.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: celestial-temporal marker

Related Themes: Garuda Purana (Vishnu-bhakti and vrata materials elsewhere; Chaturmasya-related observances in broader Purana tradition)

FAQs

This verse defines the condition for recognizing ‘double Āṣāḍha’—a calendrical doubling (e.g., repeated full-moon and Pūrvāṣāḍhā)—which is used to judge appropriate timing for vows and ritual scheduling.

It links the calendrical period to the doctrine that Viṣṇu ‘sleeps’ when the Sun is in Karkaṭa, aligning with the broader Caturmāsya framework in which certain rites and restraints are emphasized.

Use a reliable pañcāṅga to identify intercalations/doublings and observe vratas and monthly disciplines with correct timing—especially during the period associated with Viṣṇu’s yoganidrā.
