Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda)
Concept: In śuddha-bhāva (pure being), the triad of states (jāgrat-svapna-ādi) does not arise; jīvatva drops and one abides as realized Self-consciousness.
Vedantic Theme: Turīya/transcendence of avasthā-traya; jīva-bhāva as superimposition; abidance in ātma-caitanya.
Application: Meditative practice: observe waking/dream as appearances; cultivate steady abidance in awareness; reduce ‘I am the doer/experiencer’ narratives.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.239.23 (Brahman’s non-duality and mahāvākya analysis)
This verse treats liberation as a shift into śuddha-bhāva where ordinary states like waking and dream no longer bind awareness, indicating freedom from conditioned experience.
It points to the culmination of the soul’s journey as the dropping of jīvatva (individualized identity) and abiding in realized ātma-caitanya, i.e., Self-consciousness rather than embodied states.
Practice reducing ego-identification and cultivating steady awareness (through japa, meditation, dharma) so consciousness becomes less reactive to shifting mental states.
