Dharma-sāra: Dāna-mahātmyam, Karma-vāda, and the Conquest of Grief and Greed
लोभात्क्रोधः प्रभवति लोभाद्द्रोहः प्रवर्तते / लोभान्मोहश्च माया च मानो मत्सर एव च
lobhātkrodhaḥ prabhavati lobhāddrohaḥ pravartate / lobhānmohaśca māyā ca māno matsara eva ca
లోభమునుండి క్రోధము పుడుతుంది, లోభమునుండి ద్రోహము ప్రవర్తిస్తుంది; లోభమునుండే మోహము, మాయ, మానము, మత్సరమూ కలుగుతాయి।
Lord Vishnu (teaching Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Greed generates a chain of destructive mental states: krodha, droha, moha, maya, mana, matsara.
Vedantic Theme: Antahkarana-shuddhi: purification of mind by uprooting root-kleshas; bondage through rajas/tamas-driven vrittis.
Application: Track greed triggers; practice dana, gratitude, and mindful restraint; interrupt the chain early before it becomes anger and harm.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: raudra
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: vice genealogies and warnings against lobha as a root sin (general internal parallel)
This verse treats lobha as a root vice: once greed is allowed, it generates a chain of other faults—anger, malice, delusion, deceit, pride, and envy—thereby worsening karma.
By identifying greed as the seed of multiple sins, it implies how a person accumulates heavier negative karma that later shapes post-death consequences described in Garuda Purana narratives.
Treat greed as an early warning sign: reduce excessive acquisition, practice contentment and charity, and check anger and envy quickly—cutting the chain before it expands into harmful actions.
