FAQs

This verse uses vivid bodily torment to teach that adharma has concrete karmic consequences, encouraging restraint, purity, and repentance before death.

In the Preta Kanda narrative, Vishnu explains to Garuda that the jīva, bound by karma, experiences intense suffering in Yama’s domain; such descriptions function as moral instruction and warning.

Live by dharma—avoid harmful actions, practice truthfulness and self-control, and perform sincere atonement and charity—so one’s karmic load does not mature into severe post-death suffering.
