Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Pitta
Concept: Severe pāpa yields pervasive śūla (stabbing pain) and grotesque bodily corruption; the body becomes the theatre of retribution.
Vedantic Theme: Duḥkha as karmic maturation; the impermanent body’s vulnerability urges dispassion (vairāgya) and ethical correction.
Application: Let the vivid consequence imagery strengthen resolve against theft/adharma; cultivate repentance and corrective action before consequences harden.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: raudra
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.156.23–27 (culminating severity of symptoms)
This verse uses vivid bodily torment to teach that adharma has concrete karmic consequences, encouraging restraint, purity, and repentance before death.
In the Preta Kanda narrative, Vishnu explains to Garuda that the jīva, bound by karma, experiences intense suffering in Yama’s domain; such descriptions function as moral instruction and warning.
Live by dharma—avoid harmful actions, practice truthfulness and self-control, and perform sincere atonement and charity—so one’s karmic load does not mature into severe post-death suffering.
