Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Aṅga-nyāsa/limb-wise salutation to Viṣṇu as the indwelling Lord (antaryāmin) and cosmic support.
Vedantic Theme: Antaryāmitva and sarva-vyāptitva (all-pervasiveness) of Brahman/Viṣṇu; the body as a field for sādhana.
Application: Perform limb-wise namaskāra/nyāsa during pūjā or japa, cultivating awareness that the divine pervades and sustains every function of the body.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.136.10-11 (continuation of limb/offerings and vigil); Garuda Purana 1.137.1 (kalaśa-dāna as allied merit)
This verse shows a ritual method of sanctifying and protecting the body by mentally installing Viṣṇu’s epithets in specific limbs, aligning the practitioner’s physical and subtle awareness with the all-pervading divine.
By emphasizing bodily sanctification through Viṣṇu-remembrance, it supports the Purāṇic theme that purity of mind and devotion at the embodied stage strengthens one’s spiritual orientation, which is crucial for the soul’s onward journey described elsewhere in the text.
Use the verse as a brief daily practice: recite it slowly and contemplate Viṣṇu as present in these body-regions, cultivating restraint, steadiness, and devotional mindfulness in everyday life.
