Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Concept: Niṣkāma-karma and right knowledge purify results; similarly, Dvādaśī observance functions as a purifier that destroys sin.

Vedantic Theme: Antaḥkaraṇa-śuddhi as a prerequisite for higher knowledge; karma becomes purifying when desireless and aligned with dharma.

Application: Observe Dvādaśī with restraint, purity, and intention of inner cleansing; perform duties without craving for reward, using the day for self-discipline and remembrance of Hari.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

FAQs

This verse presents Dvādaśī as an auspicious observance specifically taught for pāpa-nāśa—reducing and destroying sins—by aligning practice with purity of intent.

By stressing knowledge and desireless action as purifiers, it implies that inner intention and dharmic discipline shape one’s karmic load—directly affecting post-death outcomes described elsewhere in the Garuda Purana.

Observe Dvādaśī with sincere restraint (fasting/discipline), worship and ethical conduct, and perform duties with niṣkāma intent—focusing on purification rather than reward.
