Nīti-saṅgraha: Conduct, Association, Kali-yuga Decline, and the Supremacy of Vidyā
नदीनामग्निहोत्राणां भारतस्य कलस्य च / मूलान्वेषो न कर्तव्यो मूलाद्दोषो न हीयते
nadīnāmagnihotrāṇāṃ bhāratasya kalasya ca / mūlānveṣo na kartavyo mūlāddoṣo na hīyate
నదులు, అగ్నిహోత్రాలు, మహాభారతం, కాలం—వీటి మూలాన్ని వెదకకూడదు; మూలం వరకు వెళ్ళినా దోషం తగ్గదు (నివారణం కలగదు).
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda)
Concept: Do not obsessively investigate the ‘origins’ of rivers, Agnihotra, the Mahabharata, or Time; such probing does not remove inherent limitations/defects and can erode reverence or lead to fruitless disputation.
Vedantic Theme: Limits of pramana in certain domains; acceptance of anadi (beginninglessness) of kala and the pragmatic authority of sacred tradition.
Application: Avoid unproductive cynicism and endless origin-debates; focus on practice (ritual/ethics) and meaning; apply discernment to what inquiries are beneficial vs. corrosive.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: respect for Vedic rites and itihasa-purana as pramana; cautions against futile disputation
This verse advises that probing the beginnings of certain sacred or cosmic realities (rivers, Agnihotra, the Bhārata, and Time) does not eliminate perceived imperfections; instead, one should focus on rightful practice and understanding rather than futile fault-finding at the source.
Indirectly, it supports the Purāṇic approach to dharma: liberation-related teachings rely on disciplined practice and trust in śāstra rather than endless speculative debates about origins that do not reduce inner दोष (doṣa) or karmic entanglement.
Prioritize sincere practice—ethical living, disciplined worship, and respectful engagement with tradition—over cynical origin-arguments that rarely improve conduct or remove personal shortcomings.
