Chapter 203 — नरकस्वरूपम् (Naraka-svarūpa: The Nature of Hell)
భగవాన్ అగ్ని వసిష్ఠునికి మరణ సమయంలోనూ మరణానంతరమూ కర్మకారణం ఎలా ఫలిస్తుందో వివరిస్తాడు. పుష్పాదులు సమర్పించి విష్ణు-ఆరాధన చేయడం నరకపాతాన్ని నివారిస్తుందని, అలాగే జలం, అగ్ని, విషం, ఆయుధాలు, ఆకలి, వ్యాధి లేదా పతనం వంటి సమీప కారణం కలిసినప్పుడు దేహధారి మరణిస్తాడని చెబుతాడు. ఆపై జీవుడు తన కర్మానుసారం మరొక దేహాన్ని పొందుతాడు—పాపానికి యాతన, ధర్మానికి సుఖం. యముని భయంకర దూతలు పాపులను దక్షిణ ద్వారం ద్వారా ‘కుపథం’లో నడిపిస్తారు; ధర్మాత్ములు ఇతర మార్గాల ద్వారా సాగుతారు. ఈ అధ్యాయంలో అనేక నరకాల పేర్లు, శిక్షలు చెప్పి హింస, దొంగతనం, కామదోషం, యజ్ఞ/విధి దూషణ, కర్తవ్య నిర్లక్ష్యం మొదలైన పాపాలకు తగిన యాతనలను నిర్దిష్టంగా వర్ణిస్తుంది. చివరగా భయానికి ఔషధంగా వ్రతాచరణ—ప్రత్యేకంగా మాసోపవాసం, ఏకాదశీ వ్రతం, భీష్మ-పంచకం—నరకగతి నుండి రక్షించే ధర్మసంరక్షణమని ఉపదేశిస్తుంది।
