The Determination of Śiva as the Meaning of Praṇava
न सम्प्रसूयते यो वै कुतश्चन कदाचन । यस्मिन्न भासते विद्युन्न न सूर्यो न चन्द्रमाः
na samprasūyate yo vai kutaścana kadācana | yasminna bhāsate vidyunna na sūryo na candramāḥ
எந்நேரமும் எங்கிருந்தும் பிறவாதவர்; அவருள் மின்னலும் ஒளிராது, சூரியனும் இல்லை, சந்திரனும் இல்லை—அத்தகைய பரமேசுவரன் சிவன், படைக்கப்பட்ட எல்லா ஒளிகளுக்கும் எல்லா ஆகுதலுக்கும் அப்பாற்பட்டவர்.

It points to Śiva as Pati—the unborn, unconditioned Reality—who is not illuminated by worldly lights, but is the ground of all illumination; realizing this transcendence leads the soul (paśu) toward liberation from pāśa (bondage).
The Liṅga symbolizes the formless, unborn Śiva described here; Saguna worship (form, mantra, ritual) becomes a doorway to contemplate and realize the same Nirguna Lord who is beyond sun, moon, and lightning.
Meditate on Śiva as self-luminous consciousness while repeating the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”; support it with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa as aids to steady remembrance of the unborn Pati.
