FAQs

It summarizes Purāṇic world-structure: regions (varṣas) characterized by rivers and mountains, and the dvīpas (starting with Jambūdvīpa) arranged as being encircled by seven oceans.

They are a standard cosmographic motif describing seven concentric seas surrounding the dvīpas; different Purāṇas elaborate their names and symbolic substances, but the key point here is the layered, ordered structure of the world.

This specific verse is primarily descriptive (cosmography). Its broader lesson is contextual: it frames sacred history and dharma within an ordered cosmos, which later sections connect to pilgrimage, devotion, and right conduct.
