अर्जुनस्य वधे क्रूरां करोति सम तदा मतिम् । इधर कर्ण भी नरकासुरकी अन्तरात्मासे आविष्टचित्त होनेके कारण अर्जुनका वध करनेके लिये क्रूरतापूर्ण संकल्प करने लगा
arjunasya vadhe krūrāṁ karoti saṁ tadā matim |
வைசம்பாயனர் கூறினார்—அப்போது அவன் அர்ஜுனனை வதைக்கக் கொடூரமும் இரக்கமற்றதுமான தீர்மானத்தை எடுத்தான். நரகாசுர-சம்பந்தமான தாக்கத்தால் உள்ளத்தில் ஆவிஷ்டமடைந்து கர்ணன் மனம் கலங்கி, அர்ஜுனனை கொல்லக் கொடுஞ்சங்கல்பத்தில் நிலைத்தான்.
