Duryodhana’s Fast: Śakuni’s Consolation and the Summoning of a Kṛtyā
yadi māṃ dharmarājaś ca bhīmasenaś ca pāṇḍavaḥ | yuktaṃ paramayā lakṣmyā paśyetāṃ jīvitaṃ bhavet ||
The verse highlights the human and ethical weight of recognition by the righteous: being seen and acknowledged by Dharmarāja and Bhīma while endowed with legitimate prosperity is presented as a measure of a life’s fulfillment, linking personal success to approval by dharmic exemplars rather than mere wealth.
In Vaiśaṃpāyana’s narration, a speaker expresses a wish: if Yudhiṣṭhira (Dharmarāja) and Bhīma were to behold him in supreme royal splendor (paramā lakṣmī), he would consider his life successful—indicating a desire for status and validation in the presence of the Pāṇḍavas.
