Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Appraisal of Strength and Preference for Śama
(ईदृशेडभिनिविष्टस्य पृथिवीक्षयकारके । अधर्म्यें चायशस्ये वा कार्ये महति दारुणे ।।
īdṛśe 'bhiniviṣṭasya pṛthivīkṣayakārake | adharmyeṃ cāyaśasye vā kārye mahati dāruṇe || pāṇḍavair vigrahas tāta sarvathā me na rocate || ātmajeṣu paraṃ snehaṃ sarvabhūtāni kurvate | priyāṇi caiṣāṃ kurvanti yathāśakti hitāni ca ||
வைசம்பாயனர் கூறினார்—“முழு பூமியையும் அழிவுக்குக் கொண்டுசெல்லும் இந்தப் பெரும் கொடூரச் செயலில் நீ பிடிவாதமாகப் பற்றிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறாய். இது அதர்மம்; பழியையும் அவமானத்தையும் பெருக்கும்; மேலும் மிகக் கொடுமையானதும். மகனே, பாண்டவர்களுடன் பகை கொண்டு போரைத் தொடங்குவது எனக்கு எவ்விதத்திலும் விருப்பமல்ல. உலகில் உள்ள எல்லா உயிர்களும் தம் மக்கள்மீது பேரன்பு கொள்கின்றன; தம் ஆற்றலுக்கேற்ப அவர்களுக்கு இனியதும் நலமுமானதையும் செய்ய முயல்கின்றன.”
