Educational Q&A

Do not commit adharma—especially the slaughter of one’s own kin—merely under the pressure or desires of advisers. A ruler must restrain impulsive, desire-driven policy and protect his spiritual and moral standing (devayāna) over political ambition.

Sanjaya delivers a sharp warning to the king: if the push for war is coming from ministers’ desires, the king should step back, even relinquish his wealth and retire, rather than initiate a sinful conflict that would destroy family and derail his righteous course.
