अर्थ वा यदि वा धर्मे समर्थो देशकालवित् । अर्थसंशयमापतन्न: श्रेयान्नि:संशयो नर:
artha vā yadi vā dharme samartho deśa-kāla-vit | artha-saṁśayam āpatan naḥ śreyān niḥsaṁśayo naraḥ ||
உலகிய நன்மை (அர்த்தம்) அல்லது தர்மம்—இவற்றை ஆராய்வதில் திறமையும், தேச-காலத்தின் தேவையையும் அறிந்தவனும்; பொருள்நலன் குறித்து சந்தேகம் எழும்போது அந்த சந்தேகமான வழியை விட்டுவிட்டு, சந்தேகமற்ற மனத்துடன் தர்மத்தையே மேற்கொண்டால்—அவனே சிறந்தவன் எனக் கருதப்படுகிறான்.
