धर्मस्य बहुद्वारत्वम् — Nārada’s Audience with Indra (Śānti-parva 340)

निर्वाणं सर्वधर्माणां निवृत्ति: परमा स्मृता | तस्मान्निवृत्तिमापन्नश्चरेत्‌ सर्वाज्रनिर्वृतः,“समस्त कर्मोंसे उपरत हो जाना ही परम निवृत्ति है; अतः जो निवृत्तिको प्राप्त हो गया है, वह सभी अंगोंसे सुखी होकर विचरण करे

nirvāṇaṁ sarvadharmāṇāṁ nivṛttiḥ paramā smṛtā | tasmān nivṛttim āpannaś caret sarvāṅganirvṛtaḥ ||

அனைத்து தர்மங்களின் (பிணைப்பை உண்டாக்கும் செயல்முறைகளின்) அமைதி—முழு நிவ்ருத்தியே நிர்வாணம்; இதுவே உயர்ந்த நினைவு. ஆகவே நிவ்ருத்தியை அடைந்தவன், எல்லா அங்கங்களிலும் அமைதியுடன் வாழ்வில் நடமாடுவானாக.

In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on peace and liberation, Bhishma continues advising Yudhishthira on the highest path. Here he summarizes the ideal of nivṛtti: the one established in renunciation should live calmly, free from agitation, embodying inner contentment.
