Janaka–Sulabhā Dialogue on Mokṣa and Non-attachment

Educational Q&A

Sacred or liberating knowledge should be given only to a qualified recipient: one who practices vows and discipline and has self-control. Material wealth—even the whole jewel-filled earth—cannot justify teaching it to an unfit person.

Vasiṣṭha addresses a king and advises him about the proper eligibility (adhikāra) for receiving instruction. He contrasts an undisciplined person (avratin) with a self-controlled one (jitendriya), urging the king to teach the supreme knowledge only to the latter.
