Balarāma’s Pilgrimage Context
न देवलगतिस्तत्र तव गन्तुं तपोधन । ब्रहद्मण: सदने विप्र जैगीषव्यो यदाप्तवान्
na devalagatis tatra tava gantuṃ tapodhana | brahmaṇaḥ sadane vipra jaigīṣavyo yad āptavān ||
தபோதன தேவலா! பிராமணச் சிறந்தவனே! ஜைகீஷவ்யர் அடைந்த பிரம்மாவின் சதனத்திற்குச் செல்லும் வழி (அர்ஹத்துவம்) உனக்கில்லை.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse emphasizes spiritual eligibility: access to the highest realm (Brahmā’s abode) is not gained by wish alone but by the maturity of merit, realization, and fitness—exemplified by Jaigīṣavya’s attainment.
Vaiśampāyana explains to an ascetic brāhmaṇa that he cannot go to the realm where Jaigīṣavya has gone, identifying it specifically as Brahmā’s abode and implying a distinction in spiritual rank or qualification.
