iti śrīmahābhārate bhīṣmaparvaṇi bhīṣmavadhaparvaṇi aṣṭamadivasayuddhe ekonanavatitamo 'dhyāyaḥ

This line functions as a colophon rather than a doctrinal verse: it teaches how the Mahābhārata self-consciously frames its war narrative within named books and sub-sections, reminding the reader that events are to be understood through the lenses of dharma, consequence, and the escalating moral weight of violence.
The text is formally closing a chapter situated in the Bhīṣma Parva, specifically within the Bhīṣma-vadha section, and it notes that the account pertains to the fighting of the eighth day—signposting the progression of the Kurukṣetra war toward Bhīṣma’s eventual fall.
