स वरैश्छन्दितस्तेन नूपो वचनमत्रवीत् । सहस्रबाहुर्भूयां वै चमूमध्ये गृहेडन्यथा
sa varaiś chanditas tena nūpo vacanam abravīt | sahasrabāhur bhūyāṃ vai camūmadhye gṛhe ’nyathā ||
பீஷ்மர் கூறினார்—அந்த முனிவர் வரங்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்குமாறு தூண்டியபோது அரசன் சொன்னான்—“போரில், படையின் நடுவே, நான் ஆயிரம் கரங்களுடையவனாக ஆகட்டும்; ஆனால் இல்லத்தில் வேறுபட, இரண்டு கரங்களுடையவனாகவே இருக்கட்டும். போர்க்களத்தில் எல்லா வீரர்களும் என் ஆயிரம் கரங்களைப் பார்க்கட்டும்.”
