तीर्थशौचमनर्थित्वमार्जवं सत्यमार्दवम्‌ अहिंसा सर्वभूतानामानृशंस्यं दम: शम:

Transliteration

bhīṣma uvāca | tīrtha-śaucam anarthitvam ārjavaṁ satyam ārdavam | ahiṁsā sarva-bhūtānām ānṛśaṁsyaṁ damaḥ śamaḥ || kāmanā-yācanayor abhāvaḥ saralatā satyaṁ mṛdutā ahiṁsā samasta-prāṇiṣu krūratābhāvaḥ (dayā) indriya-saṁyamaḥ mano-nigrahaś ca—etāni eva asya mānasa-tīrthasya sevanena prāptāyāḥ pavitratāyāḥ lakṣaṇāni ||

Translation

ஆசையும் யாசிப்பும் இல்லாமை, நேர்மை, சத்தியம், மென்மை, எல்லா உயிர்களிடமும் அஹிம்சை, கொடுமையின்மை எனும் கருணை, புலனடக்கம், மனக்கட்டுப்பாடு—இவையே மானசத் தீர்த்தத்தை நாடுவதால் பெறப்படும் தூய்மையின் அடையாளங்கள்.
