Rudrākṣa Māhātmya — The Greatness of Rudraksha
विना मंत्रेण हो धत्ते रुद्रा क्षं भुवि मानवः । स याति नरकं घोरं यावदिन्द्रा श्चतुर्दश
vinā maṃtreṇa ho dhatte rudrā kṣaṃ bhuvi mānavaḥ | sa yāti narakaṃ ghoraṃ yāvadindrā ścaturdaśa
मन्त्रं विना रुद्राक्षं यो धारयति मानवः। स घोरं नरकं याति यावच्चतुर्दशेन्द्रकाः॥
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Rudra
Cosmic Event: Reference to cosmic time-scale via ‘fourteen Indras’ (a long duration across manvantaric cycles), used as deterrent.
It teaches that Shaiva sacred emblems like Rudrākṣa are not mere ornaments; they must be joined to mantra (japa and intention) so the practice becomes a living connection to Pati (Śiva) rather than an empty external sign.
Like Linga-worship, Rudrākṣa is a Saguna support for devotion; the verse insists that the outer support must be energized by mantra and bhakti, aligning the devotee’s mind with Śiva rather than treating the symbol as a worldly accessory.
Wear Rudrākṣa with mantra-japa—especially the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”)—maintaining purity of conduct and regular remembrance of Śiva while using the beads for disciplined repetition.
