An unnamed devotee/hero within the narrative (as narrated by Suta Goswami)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; the verse highlights dāna/tyāga as dharmic conduct that becomes a vehicle for Śiva’s grace in Purāṇic storytelling.
Significance: Models the ‘Śiva-bhakta’ ethic: compassion to the afflicted (dayā) and willingness to sacrifice—seen as a direct attractor of anugraha.
Role: nurturing
It highlights dharmic compassion: the willingness to give oneself to relieve another’s suffering, reflecting Shaiva bhakti where ego is surrendered and sorrow is transcended through selfless intent aligned with Pati (Shiva).
In Saguna Shiva worship, the devotee imitates Shiva’s grace (anugraha) by becoming an instrument of protection and solace; such compassionate action is treated as living worship, like serving the Linga through service to beings.
A practical takeaway is sankalpa with japa—mentally offering one’s prāṇa and ego at Shiva’s feet while repeating the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), cultivating inner sacrifice and compassion rather than mere outward ritual.
