शान्तिं परां प्राप्प यदा स्थितो भू- रुत्सृज्य बाणांश्व धनुर्विचित्रम्‌ । “पितामह! यह आपके हाथसे कैसे बच गया? आप इसे इस प्रकार मथ डालिये, जिससे यह छूटने न पावे।” तब शान्तनुनन्दन भीष्मने हँसकर दुर्योधनसे कहा--“राजन्‌! जब तू अपने विचित्र धनुष और बाणोंको त्यागकर यहाँ गहरी शान्तिमें डूबा हुआ अचेत पड़ा था, उस समय तेरी बुद्धि कहाँ गयी थी? और पराक्रम कहाँ था?

vaiśampāyana uvāca | śāntiṃ parāṃ prāpya yadā sthito bhūr utsṛjya bāṇāṃś ca dhanur vicitram |

शान्तिं परां प्राप्य यदा स्थितो भू-रुत्सृज्य बाणांश्च धनुर्विचित्रम् । तदा शान्तनुनन्दनो भीष्मो हसन्निव दुर्योधनमब्रवीत्— “राजन्, यदा त्वं विचित्रधनुर्बाणान् उत्सृज्यात्र गाढशान्तौ मूढवत् पतितोऽभूः, तदा ते बुद्धिः क्व गताऽऽसीत्? पराक्रमश्च क्व?” ॥
