अध्याय ३९: विदुरेण धृतराष्ट्राय नीत्युपदेशः

धृत्या शिक्षोदरं रक्षेत् पाणिपादं च चक्षुषा । चक्षु:श्रोत्रे च मनसा मनो वाचं च कर्मणा,शिश्व और उदरकी धैर्यसे रक्षा करे अर्थात् कामवेग और भूखकी ज्वालाको धैर्यपूर्वक सहे। इसी प्रकार हाथ-पैरकी नेत्रोंसे, नेत्र और कानोंकी मनसे तथा मन और वाणीकी सत्कर्मोंसे रक्षा करे
dhṛtyā śikṣodaraṁ rakṣet pāṇipādaṁ ca cakṣuṣā | cakṣuḥśrotre ca manasā mano vācaṁ ca karmaṇā ||
धृत्या शिश्नोदरं रक्षेत् पाणिपादं च चक्षुषा । चक्षुःश्रोत्रे च मनसा मनो वाचं च कर्मणा ॥
विदुर उवाच
A graded discipline of restraint: patience checks lust and hunger; vigilant sight regulates bodily actions; the mind governs the senses; and righteous action safeguards mind and speech—making each lower impulse accountable to a higher faculty.
