Shloka 12

अव्याह्तं व्याहवताच्छेय आहु: सत्यं वदेद्‌ व्याहृतं तद्‌ द्वितीयम्‌ प्रियं वदेद्‌ व्याह्ृतं तत्‌ तृतीयं धर्म वदेद्‌ व्याह्ृतं तच्चतुर्थम्‌,बोलनेसे न बोलना ही अच्छा बताया गया है, (यह वाणीकी प्रथम विशेषता है और यदि बोलना ही पड़े तो) सत्य बोलना वाणीकी दूसरी विशेषता है यानी मौनकी अपेक्षा भी अधिक लाभप्रद है। (सत्य और) प्रिय बोलना वाणीकी तीसरी विशेषता है। यदि सत्य और प्रियके साथ ही धर्मसम्मत भी कहा जाय, तो वह वचनकी चौथी विशेषता है। (इनमें उत्तरोत्तर श्रेष्ठता है)
