Educational Q&A

Bhishma signals a dharma-lesson method: ethical principles are clarified through an authoritative old narrative (itihāsa). The coming dialogue of Ambarisha and Indra is presented as a moral exemplar to guide Yudhishthira’s understanding of right conduct.

Bhishma introduces an illustrative story: he is about to recount an ancient episode framed as a conversation between King Ambarisha and the god Indra, addressed to Yudhishthira as part of the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma.
