Āśrama-dharma: Duties of the Four Life-Stages (आश्रमधर्मः)

स्वं दैवतं ब्राह्मण: स्वेन नित्यं परान्‌ वर्णानयजन्नैवमासीत्‌ | अधरो वितान: संसृष्टो वैश्यो ब्राह्मणस्त्रिषु वर्णेषु यज्ञसृष्ट:,ब्राह्मण अपने कर्मोंद्वारा ही सदा दूसरे वर्णोके लिये अपने-अपने देवताके समान है; अतः वह दूसरे वर्णोका यज्ञ न करता हो, ऐसी बात नहीं है। जिस यज्ञमें वैश्य आचार्य आदिके रूपमें कार्य कर रहा हो, वह निकृष्ट माना गया है। विधाताने केवल ब्राह्मणको ही तीनों वर्णोंका यज्ञ करानेके लिये उत्पन्न किया है

Bhīṣma uvāca: svaṁ daivataṁ brāhmaṇaḥ svena nityaṁ parān varṇān ayajann evam āsīt | adharo vitānaḥ saṁsṛṣṭo vaiśyo brāhmaṇas triṣu varṇeṣu yajña-sṛṣṭaḥ |

भीष्म उवाच—ब्राह्मणः स्वकर्मभिरेव नित्यं परेषां वर्णानां स्वं दैवतं इव भवति; तस्मान्नैवमस्ति यत् स परवर्णान् न यजेत्। यत्र वैश्यः आचार्यादिरूपेण मिश्र्यते स यज्ञोऽधरो मतः। विधात्रा ब्राह्मण एव त्रिषु वर्णेषु यज्ञसृष्ट्यर्थं सृष्टः।
