Atithi’s Direction to the Nāga-sage Padma at Naimiṣa (अतिथ्युपदेशः—नैमिषे पद्मनागोपाख्यानप्रस्तावः)

अथ विश्वरूपो मातृपक्षवर्धनो>त्यर्थ तपस्य भवत्‌ तस्य व्रतभड्जार्थमिन्द्रो बह्दीः श्रीमत्यो5प्सरसो नियुयोज ताश्च दृष्टवा मन: क्षुभितं तस्याभवत्‌ तासु चाप्सर:सु नचिरादेव सक्तोड$भवत्‌ सक्त चैनं ज्ञात्वा अप्सरस ऊचुर्गच्छामहे वयं यथागतमिति,तदनन्तर विश्वरूप मातृपक्षकी वृद्धि करनेके लिये बड़ी भारी तपस्यामें संलग्न हो गये। यह देख उनके व्रतको भंग करनेके लिये इन्द्रने बहुत-सी सुन्दरी अप्सराओंको नियुक्त कर दिया। उन अप्सराओंको देखते ही विश्वरूपका मन चंचल हो गया और वे तुरंत ही उनमें आसक्त हो गये। उन्हें आसक्त जानकर अप्सराओंने कहा--“अब हमलोग जहाँसे आयी हैं, वहीं जा रही हैं!

atha viśvarūpo mātṛpakṣavardhano ’tyarthaṁ tapasyāṁ bhavat tasya vratabhaṅgārtham indro bahvīḥ śrīmatyo ’psaraso niyuyoja tāś ca dṛṣṭvā manaḥ kṣubhitaṁ tasyābhavat tāsu cāpsaraḥsu na cirād eva sakto ’bhavat | saktaṁ cainaṁ jñātvā apsarasa ūcuḥ—gacchāmahe vayaṁ yathāgatam iti |

अथ विश्वरूपो मातृपक्षवर्धनार्थं घोरां तपस्यामतिष्ठत्। तस्य व्रतभङ्गार्थमिन्द्रो बह्वीः श्रीमत्योऽप्सरसः प्रेषयामास। ता दृष्ट्वैव तस्य मनः क्षुभितमभवत्, नचिरादेव च तासु सक्तोऽभवत्। तं सक्तं ज्ञात्वाप्सरस ऊचुः—“गच्छामहे वयं यथागतम्।”

Austerity (tapas) and vows (vrata) are tested not only by hardship but by pleasure and attraction; ethical strength requires vigilance over the mind. The episode highlights how attachment can quickly undermine spiritual discipline, and how external provocations exploit inner weakness.

Viśvarūpa undertakes intense austerities to strengthen his maternal side. Indra, fearing the power accruing from such tapas, sends Apsarases to disrupt his vow. On seeing them, Viśvarūpa’s mind becomes agitated and he grows attached; recognizing this, the Apsarases announce their departure back to where they came from.
