Long-term tapas (disciplined effort) combined with dharma (righteous conduct) purifies a person of pāpa (sin/impurity); such purification becomes the basis for the fulfillment of one’s rightful aims (manorathas).
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma and right living, Bhīṣma continues advising the listener (addressed as mahāmate), emphasizing that sustained austerity and ethical practice lead to inner purification and consequent success.
