योनीषु च विचित्रासु संसारानशुभांस्तथा । जठरे चाशुभे वासं शोणितोदकभाजने
bhīṣma uvāca | yonīṣu ca vicitrāsu saṃsārān aśubhāṃs tathā | jaṭhare cāśubhe vāsaṃ śoṇitodaka-bhājane ||
भीष्म उवाच—योनीषु विचित्रासु जन्तवः पुनः पुनः संसारानशुभान् प्राप्नुवन्ति; जठरे चाशुचौ शोणितोदकभाजने वासं कुर्वन्ति। एतादृशं देहधर्मं पुनर्जन्मदुःखं च चिन्तयित्वा, परं हितमात्मानं प्रति प्रवर्तेत; तदवाप्तये शास्त्रोक्तान् योगान् नानाविधान् अवगच्छेत्।
भीष्म उवाच
The verse urges dispassion toward embodied life by reflecting on the painful and impure conditions of birth and rebirth; this reflection should motivate the seeker to pursue the highest good—realization of the Self—through śāstra-taught yogic disciplines.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma addresses the king and describes the harsh realities of transmigration and gestation to redirect attention from worldly aims to liberation-oriented practice.
