Educational Q&A

The verse models dhārmic learning through respectful inquiry: a ruler seeking ethical clarity asks about the causes behind a sage’s renown and attainments, implying that greatness (name, radiance, ṛddhi) has intelligible roots in conduct, tapas, and knowledge rather than mere chance.

In Śānti Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira questions a knowledgeable speaker about the sage Uśanā—why he is called Śukra and how he achieved ṛddhi—requesting a full account of the sage’s rise, qualities, and accomplishments.
