Dāna ethics, lawful wealth, and settling obligations

bhīṣma uvāca | mahārāja! tataḥ pitāmahaḥ vṛkṣa-tṛṇa-oṣadhīḥ āhūya tān api tām eva kathāṃ vaktum ārabdhavān | brahmovāca—iyaṃ vṛtravadha-anupaprāptā mahābhayā brahmahatyā prādurbhūtā indram anubadhnāti; asyāś caturthaṃ bhāgaṃ yūyaṃ pratīcchata | tato vṛkṣauṣadhitṛṇaṃ tathāivokte yathātatham, vyathitaṃ vahni-vad rājan, brahmāṇam idam abravīt |

Educational Q&A

The passage teaches that moral consequences of grave violence (here, the taint of brahmahatyā) do not vanish simply because an act is politically or cosmically expedient; they must be borne and apportioned within the moral order. Responsibility can be distributed, and even the natural world is portrayed as participating in the balancing of ethical debt.

Brahmā summons the trees, grasses, and medicinal herbs and asks them to accept one-fourth of the brahmahatyā that has arisen after Vṛtra’s slaying and is pursuing Indra. Distressed, the plant-world community reacts and begins to respond to Brahmā, continuing the episode of how the burden of sin is shared.
