Svapna–Manas–Guṇa–Brahma-vicāra
पुरा दानवमुख्या हि क्रोधलोभसमन्विता: । बलेन मत्ता: शतशो नरकाद्या महासुरा:,पूर्वकालमें नरकासुर आदि सैकड़ों मुख्य-मुख्य दानव क्रोध और लोभके वशीभूत हो बलके मदसे मतवाले हो गये थे
purā dānavamukhyā hi krodhalobhasamanvitāḥ | balena mattāḥ śataśo narakādyā mahāsurāḥ ||
पुरा दानवमुख्या हि क्रोधलोभसमन्विताः । बलेन मत्ताः शतशो नरकाद्या महासुराः ॥
भीष्म उवाच
Unrestrained anger and greed, when joined with pride in strength, intoxicate the mind and drive even the powerful toward unrighteous conduct and eventual downfall; therefore self-mastery is essential to dharma.
Bhishma recalls an ancient example: many leading Dānavas/Asuras—Naraka among them—became maddened by power under the sway of anger and greed, setting up a cautionary illustration within his moral instruction.
