Dama-pradhāna-dharma (Self-restraint as the Root of Dharma) — Śānti-parva 154

(Jambuka)

Educational Q&A

Do not cling stubbornly to grief; life is uncertain, and lamentation cannot reverse death. The verse urges restraint, realism, and detachment in the face of mortality.

Jambuka addresses someone overwhelmed by sorrow, rebuking repeated fixation on mourning and questioning the possibility of restoring the person’s life, emphasizing the uncertainty of survival and the futility of persistent lament.
