mitre vā yadi vā śatrau tasyāpi calitā matiḥ | na viśvased aviśvaste viśvaste nātiviśvaset ||
भीष्म उवाच—मित्रे वा यदि वा शत्रौ तस्यापि चलिता मतिः। यः स्वार्थं देशकालौ च न परीक्ष्य मित्रेष्वेवातिविश्वसति, शत्रुष्वेव चात्यन्तमविश्वसति, सर्वेषु च प्रेमभावमेव स्थापयितुमिच्छति, तस्य बुद्धिरपि चञ्चला भवति। तस्मादविश्वस्ते न विश्वसेद्, विश्वस्ते नातिविश्वसेत्। (एतदर्थं मूषकसहाय्येन चाण्डालजालात् मार्जारस्य मोक्षवृत्तान्तोऽनुक्रम्यते।)
