Vyāghra–Gomāyu Saṃvāda (व्याघ्रगोमायु संवाद) — Testing Character Beneath Appearances
evaṁ cāvamatasyāha viśvāsaṁ me na yāsyasi | tvayi cāpetaviśvāsa mamodvego bhaviṣyati ||
The verse highlights an ethical principle: public contempt or dishonour corrodes mutual trust, and once trust is broken, relationships become governed by fear and suspicion rather than dharma and goodwill.
Bhishma, speaking in the Shanti Parva, states that because he has been insulted in the present context, he can no longer maintain confidence in the other party; with trust gone, he anticipates ongoing anxiety and fear in dealing with them.
